FIFA president urges African federations to unite

President of the world football governing body, FIFA, Gianni Infantino has urged African federations to unite for betterment of the game.

Speaking during Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) annual general assembly in South Africa on Sunday, he said a lot of things could be achieved in the growth of football if federations worked together.

Infantino said  only five out of 54 African nations used to represent the continent at the World Cup, and it was difficult for them to plan for the future, adding that since he assumed office, ‘we  have moved from five to 10’.

He said participating at the World Cup was important and Africa should be ready to win it.

He thus advised African countries to  now start preparations if they were to realise their dream of leaving a mark at the finals.

Infantino said CAF elections billed for Morocco next year were crucial for both COSAFA and Africa, adding that it was imperative for Africa to make the right decision as to who should lead them.

“In this respect, dear friends the role of COSAFA is important and you are all aware that we have to work for unity,” he said.

On other issues, he said FIFA had been financing the federations to play tournaments.

Infantino said part of the innovation that he implemented and was inspired by the 2015 COSAFA meeting he attended, was increasing participation of national teams at the World Cup.

Fourteen COSAFA members, including Botswana, which was represented by Botswana Football Association president, MacLean Letshwiti, attended the annual general meeting.ENDS
