Majwe Mining introduces village committees competitions

Majwe Mining Joint Venture will in December introduce VDC and Ward Development Committee (WDC) competitions in Jwaneng and Mabutsane Sub-district as a way of appreciating the significant role played by VDC’s in the development of the community.

This was revealed by Majwe Mining Joint Venture Social Performance Coordinator, Mr Ntobeledzi Boitumelo during the Mabutsane Sub-district council forum at Mabutsane recently.

Mr Boitumelo said that the competitions, expected to be sponsored with close to P130 000, would be in four categories of sustainable projects, good governance, environmental management as well cultural heritage.

He said that under the category of sustainable projects, the objective was to instil a sense of empowerment and productivity through sustaining VDC’s and WDC’s ongoing or start-up projects.

“In the category of good governance, we want to promote teamwork and professionalism leading to good governance of VDCs. We will look into key areas like accurate and transparent financial reporting and disclosures, annual planning, financial management and stakeholder engagement among others,” he said.

Mr Boitumelo said that under the  environmental management category, the aim was to help raise public awareness in keeping the environment clean and encourage community participation in waste management, while the last category of cultural heritage was aimed at encouraging communities to embrace and preserve their diverse cultural heritage.

He said that templates would be provided per category for ease of reference while a task team would be selected to run the competition.

A total of 19 villages will be covered under the Mabutsane Sub-district at a share of P69 200 of the total sponsorship, while Jwaneng will get the remaining P60 000.

The winning village or ward in the category of sustainable projects will get P15 000, position two will attract P9 000 while third placed will receive P6000.

Under each of the other three categories position one winner will scoop P3 000, position two P2 000 and third P1 000.

The remainder of the total cash will cover consolation prices.

In her word of appreciation, Maokane ward councilor, Ms Tshupoentle Kgetse hailed the initiative by Majwe Mining as welcome. She said it would help villages dig out their histories as well as help equip VDCs with management skills.

For her part, Ms Lorato Taolo of the Department of Bye-Law Enforcement said that most VDCs in the Mabutsane sub-district performed relatively well, only failing in areas such as debt collection.

She expressed hope that the prize monies would be used in drilling the committee members in areas such as business management rather than spending it on tangible items. ends
