Police warn against crypto currency fraudsters
Botswana Police Service (BPS) warns members of the public about cybercrime fraudsters that use crypto currency (digital money devices) to swindle unsuspecting victims of their money.
A Press statement from BPS notes that criminals mimic legitimate companies that deal in crypto currency by stealing such companies’ logos and information to make customers believe they were dealing with authentic company.
It says that immediately after the customer has logged on their wallet information in the application, the customer are then disconnected and find themselves unable to log in again, meanwhile, suspects would be transacting money from the customers’ wallet using the supplied information.
The release further states that in other instances, criminals imitate large scale businesses that sell equipment’s for mining, farming and many others to lure customers through social media platforms to buy the product.
“The fraudster would then cease communication once the customer has deposited the money” noted the release.
Furthermore BPS urges the public to establish the legitimacy of companies by double checking contacts of companies in the online telephone directory of the relevant country. Ends
