Top 4 promotes breeding

Batswana on October 24 gathered at Sebele Agricultural Showgrounds to witnesses Top 4 auction sale.

Speaking in an interview with BOPA, Top 4 Association chairperson Mr Phenyo Nthase said the event included bidding for four categories of cattle breeds being, Limousin; Brahman; Charolaise and Simental cattle. 

In total, 55 animals were showcased at the event, all coming from breeders across the country. 

Mr Nthase said the event promoted market access and the cattle industry in its entirety. 

He said, the event introduced farmers and the general community to superior cattle genetics and further indicated the actual price of breeds within a market context and time. 

Mr Nthase said with event scaling to greater heights each year they had realised much increase in the interest of Batswana who endeavor to go unto livestock farming. 

He said such had propelled the team to consider scheduling the event annually, (every last week of October) as opposed to previously where they skipped a few years in between events. 

Mr Nthase had indicated that for each breed they witnessed record-breaking bidding from Batswana; with highest bid for Simental going at P100 000, Brahman at P80 000, Limousine at P80 000 and Charolaise at P80 000. 

Mr Nthase said during the meet and greet session, assistant minister of agricultural development and food security Ms Beauty Manake encouraged farmers to commercialise breeding of cattle and move away from doing it as a hobby, in order to have the sector benefitting the nation.
