Greater Gaborone lockdown lifted

Government has lifted the current greater Gaborone lockdown with effect from midnight today (August 13), Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Lemogang Kwape has announced.

"The lifting takes effect at midnight tonight, but with conditions partcularly affecting schools," he said when addressing the nation a while ago.

Miniser Kwape said conditions would include re-opening of schools in a phased manner; starting with completing classes. He, however, cautioned that to come out of this lockdown while cases continued to escalate was a precarious situation.

Dr  Kwape also announced that one more Motswana has succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have also registered another death associated with COVID-19, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Botswana to three.

He said Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching hospital had admitted 157 COVID-19 patients with one patient on a ventilator machine and another one on oxygen support.

"We are registering a lot higher number of new COVID-19 cases that our country can not cope with and there is clear indication of local transmission," Minister Kwape added.

He said as of August 10, the number of new Batswana cases was 203. This marked a 130 per cent increase in number of Batswana infected with COVID-19 within a two-week period.

He called on Batswana to change behaviour and adopt a new normal if they were to conquer and preserve themselves as a people.

"The new normal includes ongoing reviews and adaptations of management protocols as well as locking down and opening up as may be dictated by the prevailing circimstances," he added.

For his part, Presidential COVID-19 Task Team's acting coordinator, Professor Mosepele Mosepele said the total number of Batswana cases was 360 as of August 10. Out of the number, 12 were health workers, while 120 had recovered. ends
