Maniki advises public to adhere to protocols

Police in Francistown have expressed concern about some members of the publc, who fail to comply with COVID-19 protocols.

Central police station commander, Superintendent Lebalang Maniki, said the sorry state of affairs was visible during joint operations by the  Botswana Police Service, Department of Road Transport and Safety as well as  Francistown City Council’s environmental health division recently.

The operation, he said, was aimed at enforcing compliance to COVID-19 regulations.

Superintendent Maniki said it was established during a joint operation that there were scores of people who did not wear their face masks properly, something that he stated could expose them to COVID-19.

It was established that some public transport operators were non-compliant in terms of hand sanitizing and washing of hands for passengers as well as maintenance of registers.

“It became evident that people register themselves with wrong names and some writing is not clearly visible”, Supt Maniki said.

He stated further that the joint operation observed that there was widespread use of inappropriate home-made sanitisers by those within the public transport and shops, which did not augur well with the health of the customers.

One other observation that got the police worried was crowding at Nswazi Mall especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

“People do not wear their facial masks when taking pictures courtesy of street photographers on the fringes  of the mall in question without compliance to set rules and regulations including social distancing”, said Supt Maniki. Any crowding in public spaces and at homes, he said was prohibited.

“The stage of public awareness is long past, the general public has been informed about the protocols and we now have to enforce the law”,  Supt Maniki added.

To date, the joint operation had nabbed and charged about 100 people for various offences in violation of COVID-19 protocols. ENDS
