President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi yesterday welcomed back two envoys who have completed their tour of duty.

The two are high commissioner to South Africa Dr Lameck Nthekela who had been serving there since 2018 and Mr David Newman who had served as ambassador to the United States since 2015.

On the same day, President Masisi also bid farewell to the newly appointed high commissioner to Namibia Dr Comma Serema.

Dr Nthekela was previously accredited to the Scandinavian countries as well as Poland and Ukraine.

In his remarks,  President Masisi expressed delight at the envoy’s  safe return amid the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly as the countries they had been serving were greatly affected.

Dr Masisi wished Batswana remaining at the two missions  good health and encouraged them to stay safe.

The President commended Mr Newman’s representation in the US which he said was applauded by stakeholders.

Ambassador Newman’s representation in the U.S had been impactful, he said.

He said Mr Newman’s successor would continue the good legacy and benefit from his wise counsel.

Dr Masisi also expressed confidence in high commissioner designate Dr Serema saying it was important for Botswana to have relations with Namibia on both economic and political fronts.

He said Botswana would enhance ties with Namibia revealing that the two countries were currently engaging on Covid-19 management in the region.

In an interview, Dr Serema said it was important for Botswana to forge relations with other countries even during the Covid-19 pandemic and cooperate in various sectors beneficial to both.

Dr Serema said among his key priorities was the further enhancement of relations between Botswana and Namibia.

Namibia, he explained, was an alternative gateway to economic activities.

It was therefore imperative for the two countries to have warm and helpful relations especially at this time of Covid-19 pandemic, he said.BOPA
