Manake roots for small stock production

Farmers have been implored to invest in small stock production.

Speaking during livestock auction at Voorslag in Letlhakane on Saturday, the Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Ms Beauty Manake urged farmers to start investing in small stock production since it had potential to yield profit at an early stage.

She said there was need to fast-track implementation of Setata farm, which was envisaged to be a centre of excellence in small stock production in Boteti.

Ms Manake stated that Botswana had secured a 1 000 tones small stock market in South Arabia as well as the Norwegian market, through SACU agreement, which  required 500 tonnes.

Assistant Minister Manake stated that Botswana was at 57 per cent of mutton production and 36 per cent of chevon, noting that there was need to find  market for local consumption and export market, hence the need to invest in the sector.

Lobu farm in Kgalagadi, she said, was established to grow the sector with good small stock genes. She said some farmers were trained and provided the market for breeding stock for farmers.

Voorslag coordinator, Mr Eras Van Niekerk, said the auction was good from a sales point of view, though a number of livestock auctioned was less, compared to the previous year.

Mr Van Niekerk said he was impressed by farmers who had quality small stock.

The auction, he said, made a huge impact because it motivated farmers and made people realise the value of small stock.

Mr Keitumetse Modori, a  farmer, who sold a Boer goat at P27 500, said the auction was crucial because it provided a market for their stock.

Mr Modori encouraged the youth to venture into small stock production, stating that it was a long term investment, albeit requiring passion.

He stated that farming could be used to create job opportunities, although it had challenges. ENDS
