Disease containment to determine opening of economy- VP

The Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane says easing  of movement restrictions  and opening the economy is determined by COVID-19 containment and management.

Speaking during a visit to Mabutsane on June 26 where he met with COVID-19 team, he said all efforts towards opening of the economy must be under-pinned by the containment and management of the disease.

The Vice President said COVID-19 had challenged and tested Batswana’s resilience and self-reliance, adding if the country did not become self-sufficient it was at a risk of importing infectious diseases such as COVID-19, among others.

He said Botswana’s geographical position, as a landlocked country and a transit point to many neighbouring countries, put it at high risk.

He said Botswana would continue to be a transit to other countries therefore it meant that if people who ferry essential commodities were not tested at points of entry the virus would be imported into the country.

As long as Botswana is a passage to other countries, he said, it would always be at risk of COVID-19 thus combating the disease at points of entry was paramount to ensure containment and management of the disease.

However, many parts of the world have been under some form of lockdown to slow the spread of COVID-19.

While many were eager to see restrictions lifted, people should therefore remain patient and vigilant, as the economy transits into the new normal, he said.

Mr Tsogwane said the country began easing restrictions in areas that showed a lower incidence of cases or risks, adding with a controlled, strategic approach, Botswana could win the fight against the pandemic.

He said as the economy eased out, it was paramount to ensure that transmission controlling measures were in place, health system capacities are in place to detect, test, isolate and treat every COVID-19 case and trace every contact. ends
