Cyclists utilise technology to stay fit

Riders have not allowed the extreme social distancing regulation to deter them from adhering to their training schedules.

According to Cycle4Life club member, Tshepiso Mmoloke, online applications and equipment assisted cyclists to continue their riding and keeping fit at the same time.

“The available technology can assist cyclists to ride virtually and connect with other cyclists across the world,” stated Mmoloke.

The most common application for virtual riding is called Zwift, which Mmoloke said was connected to a smart indoor cycling trainer and projected the route on a screen, either television, computer or cellphone.

He said with Zwift, one could ride with other cyclists in different routes. “A great training option during lockdown is arguably indoor trainers’ especially smart trainers,” noted Tsela Riders club chairperson, Ediretse Ramahobo.

Ramahobo indicated that these allowed for scientific training programmes, which could be tailored with specific outcomes in mind.

Tsela Riders club has a three-year partnership with GetSure, supported the club with provision of technical equipment, training and racing apparel.

Besides app training, Ramahobo said they also encouraged riders to generally keep fit via proper dieting and using physical training methods such as jogging and running around the yard and where possible engaging on aerobics exercises.

Other applications included Road Cycling Tours (RGT), Trainer Road, BKool, Sufferfest and FulGaz among others. ENDS
