Engagement critical

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has stressed the need for Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations to engage each other for mutual benefits and unity.

“We must engage more, open up and be transparent to one another,” said Dr Masisi.

Addressing an Angolan  delegation led by the country’s External Relations minister, Dr Manuel Augusto, in Gaborone on December 2, Dr Masisi said working together would bring solutions to some of the region’s most pressing challenges.

He informed his visitors that Botswana was currently experiencing one of the harshest weather conditions which had severely affected both flora and fauna.

Citing Ngamiland, he said the area recently experienced a dry spell which had resulted in some wildlife species and livestock perishing.

President Masisi noted that the upper northern part of Botswana was the nerve centre of the country’s tourism industry which flourished on water flowing from Angola.

“Even though nature was taking its toll on our tourism, we are hopeful that Angola will receive adequate rainfall and that the rivers that support our tourism sector will soon be beaming with life,” he said.

Dr Augusto was accompanied by among others Angola’s ambassador to Botswana, Dr Beatriz Morais. Ends
