The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Tshekedi Khama, has urged a team heading to African Games to view the event as an interaction platform as well as a skills sharing opportunity.

Giving a keynote address at Team Botswana send-off ceremony in Gaborone recently, Khama announced that 11 sport codes comprising 98 athletes and 36 officials would represent the country at the Rabat, Morocco games from August 19-30.

He advised the athletes to enjoy their stay while interacting with their counterparts from different countries.

Team Botswana chef de mission, Bobby Gaseitsiwe, commended government for finding it appropriate for Botswana to participate in the continental games.

He urged athletes to take full advantage of the opportunity by letting it be a launching pad for their careers.

“Our intention is to play better than we did in the last African spectacle in Congo Brazzaville.

We will continue to raise the national flag high and display admirable behaviour that Batswana are known for and ensure that we do not tarnish the country’s image,” he said.

Gaseitsiwe said most of the codes were in a quest to make it to Tokyo 2020 games, so will use the continental meet to hone their skills.

While volleyball, part of the medical personnel, Taekwondo, swimming and cycling left over the weekend, chess, karate, tennis and other medical personnel will leave today.

Athletics and weightlifting will leave on Thursday. ENDS
