All systems go for desert race

It is all systems go for motorsport fanatics as all roads lead to Selebi Phikwe for the Toyota 1000 Desert Race to be held over the weekend.

In an interview on the sidelines of the activation held at the Molapo Shopping Complex in Gaborone on Saturday, BTO’s acting public relations and communications manager Samuel Lephalo pointed out that the event was meant to hype the public and sensitise them about the upcoming event.

Lephalo said the activations had been going on for over a month now in different platforms throughout the country.

He said they were hoping to host a successful event just like the previous ones when they were held in different places such as Kumakwane and Jwaneng.

He urged patrons to enjoy the event responsibly, noting that as they would be travelling to Selebi Phikwe from around the country, they should drink responsibly and take good care of themselves so as not to spoil the fun.

Furthermore, he pointed out that for the event to continue and be enjoyable, patrons should exercise some sense of responsibility.

He said they had joined hands with SPEDU in a bid to revatilise the economy of the town, which took a knock ever since the mine closed down.

He went on to say residents of the town and those in the periphery would also make business by selling things such as beverages, food and fire wood.

Botswana motorsport public relations officer Joseph Khengere said events such as the desert race were a good economic drive for the country because they attracts multitudes from across the country and even outside the borders.

He said motorsport would be represented by local riders some as young as 16-years-old, who want to hoist the country’s flag high in the bikes category.

He revealed that the fans favourite, Ross Branch, who has been to the most grueling race on earth, the Dakar Rally, would not participate this time around.

Rather, he said he would grace  the event to give the ‘small boys’ some morale.

He said after Ross’ exploits in Dakar, local riders were fired up because they now believe that it was possible for one to take on the world.

Meanwhile, the race’s start and end points will be at the Sam Sono Stadium. ENDS
