Boxers shape up for continental bouts

Botswana national team boxers utilised this past weekend’s interclub championship to shape up for the intensive continental matches lined up before the end of the year.

The interclub tournament hosted by the University of Botswana Boxing Club attracted a good number of young and promising pugilists from across the country.

The national team boxers will kickoff their hectic schedule by visiting Zambia for a friendly tournament this coming weekend.

Hot on the heels of the Zambian tournament, they will travel to Bangkok, Thailand for an international tournament involving some of the finest boxers from the south eastern Asian countries.

Confirming the closely tied 2020 Olympic programme for the local boxers on the sidelines of this past  weekend’s interclub matches, Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) publicity secretary, Taolo Tloutsile said after taking part in the Bangkok tournament the team would visit Paris, France for yet another mouthwatering boxing tournament.

The tournament will be the last training camp before the team heads to Rabat, Morocco for this year’s All Africa Games.

The national team is likely to close their hectic schedule with the flagship amateur boxing tournament, the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships slated for Russia in September.

Meanwhile, the national team boxers proved their mettle on Saturday with well executed game plans against their less fancied opponents.

Men’s elite 52kg boxer Rajab Mohammed had an easy match against visiting Tshepiso Mojatlhase from Ghanzi convincing all the three judges at the end of the third round.

DTCB’s Treasure Moremi beat the hosts Keamogetse Ditodi in the elite 60kg. The much anticipated female elite 60kg between Keamogetse Kenosi and Aratwa Kasemang of UB was not played.

Prisons’ Mmusi Tswiige emerged victorious in his 69kg match against Selebi Phikwe’s Kagiso Ntoti. Other interesting matches were between the exciting female boxer, Lone Selebo from Molepolole, who beat Kemmonye Kelefe of EMG. In the closely contested 60kg male elite Prisons’ Mmoloki Thipe beat DTCB’s Ofetile Chapo.

BMC’s youngster Tshiamo Malabota pulled a shocker when he defeated the tried and tested Kefentse Molalapata. ENDS
