Tshipi e ntsho race for charity

The annual charity challenge bicycle race dubbed Tshipi e Ntsho Race was once again held in Metsimotlhabe on May 12.

Barorisi social club organised the event to raise funds for the elderly and the sick.

The race was introduced in 2015 after the founder, Mpopi Mokgware, saw a need to resuscitate old bicycle models such as humber and colombia.

Cyclers participated in the Tshipi e ntsho challenge of 12 km route with varying obstacles and challenge.

Another race was designed for modern racing bicycles such as mountain bikes on a 60 km terrain.

However, Tshipi e ntsho challenge stole the show with veteran cycler, Shadrack Motswere from Cycle for Life club in Gaborone scooping position one. Motswere won a brand new humber bicyle.

Meshack Guta from Cobra team also from Gaborone got position two pocketing P300.

Motswere explained that he was a regular in cycling races.

Last year he got position one in two races in July and September in Mmathethe with his humber.

He further explained that a humber bicycle model did not have gears, instead the rider had to use his body in place of gears.

He also stated that riding a humber needed riding skill.

Another advantage of riding the old models was that it gave the body a rigorous exercise.

The old models are heavy because they are made out of pure metal making them durable, hence they (tshipi e ntsho riders and supporters) want to make sure that they promote the old models so that they do not go into extinction.

The 84-year-old veteran humber rider, Jackso Kegoeng, who was the 2015 champion did not participate in this year’s race, but he honored at the event.

He said he started riding humber bicycle since 1975. Even though he did not participate in this year’s race, he said he still rides his humber hence his youthful look.

He said back in the days, he used to ride every day from Metsimotlhabe to work at the University of Botswana and, by six o’clock each morning he would long have arrived.

He encouraged those who wanted to look young and healthy to use the humber model.

Area MP Maj. Gen. Pius Mokgware commended the race organisers saying that if more people could consider to use bicycles to and from work, it could ease congestion on the roads.

He also stated that if the race could be promoted nationally, it could put Metsimotlhabe on the map.

In that way, he said the race could play a pivotal role in the socio economic development of the village.

He further noted that activities of this nature could promote the village and its various communities.

The events, he said, would in turn attract tourism related activities in the village.

Patron of the event, Keorapetse Tlhakodi, promised supporters an even bigger and exciting event next year with lots of activities.

To make the event more exciting next year he said, there would be a kids race and will even go to an extent of profiling riders as well as scouting for talent.

He thanked the sponsors among them Fidelity Print Mark, NM transport as well as individuals who made the event a success. Ends
