Tour de Limpopo battle starts

Botswana’s Team Swift Cycling club is participating in the inaugural Tour de Limpopo cycling race, which started in Bela Bela on May 15.

The event has attracted 19 international professional cycling teams with over 124 cyclists from across the world.

Team Swift, which aspires to be a continental team, has sent six riders to the four stage cycle challenge.

The six riders consists of four Batswana and two South African riders.

The team’s manager, David Lebalelo, said Tour de Limpopo challenge would give their riders exposure and experience.

Tour de Limpopo race showcase the diversity of the Limpopo Province as a premier cycling destination.

Last year, the overall race was won by ProTouch’s Gustav Basson, with Jayde Julius second and Clint Hendricks third.

Multiple champion Nolan Hoffman would compete at this year’s edition.

Hoffman recently won the Airport Junction Race for Cancer 120km challenge in Gaborone.

Limpopo Tourism Agency Chief Executive Officer, Nomasonto Ndlovu, said the event would return to Limpopo Province again in 2020.

She said adventure tourism was another growing segment in Limpopo Province, adding that it attracted a high volume of cyclists who visited for mountain biking as well as 4x4 off road enthusiasts from all over South Africa and beyond.

This, she indicated, found resonance with Limpopo Tourism Agency’s Marketing Strategy, particularly on the sport tourism front, mainly due to the province’s scenic beauty provided by the topography.

Ndlovu said the event would help grow the province’s sport tourism profile.

The Tour de Limpopo would be a four-day stage race starting in Bela Bela and heading north to the capital city of Polokwane.

Teams will stay overnight before heading east to the town of Tzaneen, where riders will stay for two nights before heading back to Polokwane on 18 May, to finish the Tour at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Ends
