Consultations on Kanye stadium ongoing

Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) deputy chairperson, Thapelo Pelekekae says Kanye residents have expressed mixed feelins on the constrcution of a mini stadium in a plot, which was initially earmarked for a fully-fledged stadium.

In an interview, Pelekekae said they did not reach a consensus and it agreed that a delegation be sent to meet Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development.

He said residents maintained that they had been promised a fully-fledged stadium and had raised concern that the fully-fledged stadium might not be constructed, if they were to agree with the idea of constructing a mini stadium on the 17.25 hectare plot.

Meanwhile, Pelekekae explained that Kanye Administrative Authority had since identifed an eight hectare plot as another option.

“The plot is located in Mhiko, about 250m from the plot, earmarked for the bigger stadium,” he said.

Pelekekae said the envisioned fully-fldged stadium, which was under the National Development Plan II, could not be contructed due to financial constraints.

As a result, he said KAA then welcomed government’s decision to construct 10 mini stadia in the country, Kanye included.

He said sourcung of more funds to upgrade the mini stadium into a fully-fledged one would be done in the coming years.

The mini stadium will include the football and netball pitches, ablutions, mini tuck shop, changing rooms and 200-seat stand, which will be the first phase of the stadium. ENDS
