Khwai trust invests in education

Khwai Development Trust (KDT) has introduced a policy of assisting students admitted at tertiary institutions with a settlement allowance of P2 500.

In an interview with the trust manager, Mr Michael Matlapeng, he said the settlement allowance was a once off payment, adding that they had realised that students from the village, especially those sponsored by government, were struggling to make ends meet while settling at tertiary institutions.

He said the allowance would make a big difference to the students, as they would manage to deal with some of their personal errands.

The trust also has a sponsorship initiative whereby students are sponsored to do short courses of their choice.

Mr Matlapeng said some of their programmes included assisting the elderly, orphans and disabled persons with monthly allowances.

He said the trust also used to construct houses for destitute persons, but that the programme had been suspended.

“We also assist the Village Development Committee with a budget for development projects,” he said.

Asked about the trust financial status, Mr Matlapeng revealed that they were stable as they managed to execute most of their planned projects.

The trust operates three camping facilities in NG19. Magotlho, Sable Ally and Matswere and the trust also takes responsibility of the NG18 area through a joint venture partnership (JVP) for photographic tourism activities.

Mr Matlapeng pointed out that they were working on some projects to diversify their income, citing the upgrading of the Magotlho campsite.

He said the self-catering campsite had no ablution blocks and that they had decided to construct them and  adjust prices.

Mr Matlapeng said the project was anticipated to be completed next month.

The trust was formed to represent the interests of the community of Khwai, a small village situated at the heart of the Okavango Delta. ENDS
