MPs get top marks

President Mokgweetsi Masisi yesterday treated MPs to a State House lunch characterised by a relaxed and cordial atmosphere.

Speaking during the luncheon which was also attended by senior government officials, President Masisi said he thought it ideal to have a meal with the MPs after his first 100 days in office and as Parliament adjourned.

He thanked the MPs for their commitment noting that this winter parliamentary sitting was one of the most progressive and productive sessions ever in the history of Botswana Parliament as many bills were passed.

President Masisi said because MPs were delivering on their work he would, subject to Parliament’s approval, set up a committee to look into their remuneration.

Saying State House was home to all Batswana, President Masisi said come September 30, 2018 the presidential residence would be  open for merry making.

He however explained jokingly that there would be no wheelbarrows used to ferry out people who had overindulged.

For her part First Lady Neo Masisi thanked the MPs for making the president’s work easy by working in harmony with him as evidenced by his constant jovial mood at home.

She promised to invite MPs’ spouses in future to discuss issues of mutual interest together.

Speaking on behalf of the Gabane/Mmankgodi MP Maj. Gen. Pius Mokgware thanked the president for inviting them to his new official residence saying this was in line with Setswana tradition which advocates for people to invite members of their community to their new home.

He emphasized the need for MPs to be always accompanied by their spouses to official functions.

Giving a vote of thanks, the Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Gladys Kokorwe said she appreciated the fact that MPs from different camps sat together for lunch.

She concurred that the winter session was one of the most productive sessions in recent times particularly looking at the quality and quantity of the bills passed. Ends
