Practical subjects gateway to entrepreneurship - Kwerepe

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Thato Kwerepe has encouraged learners to start their own businesses as well as employ their peers upon completion of their basic education using skills acquired through their practical subjects.

Mr Kwerepe said this during the official opening of the national practical subjects fair in Francistown on July 10.

He also indicated that upon completion of secondary education, learners would have acquired the necessary vocational and entrepreneurship skills that would enable them to join the world of work immediately.

“I wish to encourage learners to take practical subjects seriously and take advantage of opportunities accorded to them by the government and non-government organizations.

There are programmes such as youth grant scheme, LEA, CEDA that you can exploit,” he said

He further explained that one of the major intents of the fair, among others, was to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their talents in practical subjects as well as fosters cohesion and skills transfer.

“The fair provides an opportunity for all students who studies these practical subjects to compete in a fair, supportive and inclusive environment,” he added

For his part, practical subjects national coordinator, Mr Benny Phiri explained that the fair was a combination of seven subjects competing under one roof to impart practical skills onto students.

Mr Phiri emphasised that students and teachers shared ideas when they came together, adding practical subjects fair displayed abundant skills that had been ignored for a long time.

He observed that practical subjects in Botswana faced a number of challenges which included financial constraints and lack of tools and resources for practicals.

Meanwhile, North East region acting director, Ms Bose Tema noted that it was important for students from across the country to meet in one place and share experiences and learn from one another. ENDS
