Club elders keep GU moving

Gaborone United committee of elders has vowed to resuscitate the club and bring it to its glory days.

The club is currently plagued by debt and players’ exodus something which has left the club supporters wondering if GU will ever return to its glory days.

Briefing the media about the status of the club recently, a member of committee of elders, Seth Brown said the general membership gave committee of elders mandate to hold the fort at their special general meeting held in Palapye.

He said committee of elders had to carry out what was prescribed in the club’s constitution, which stipulated that within two months a special general meeting should be held, where the executive committee would be elected to run the club.

“The constitution allows us to stay not more than three months. I think the three months is given so that in the event we fail to call the special general meeting within two months, then we can have a window for another month,” he said.

Brown said as a committee they had elected an interim committee, which was chaired by Boitumelo Nsunge. University of Botswana media studies lecturer, Dr Kennedy Ramojela was appointed  secretary while Mosimanetau Mosimanyane is the interim treasurer.

Furthermore, he said the interim committee found the club in “dire straits” adding that they would not shy away from telling the nation that Gaborone United was broke and it was upon all stakeholders to resuscitate it.

“We have been talking to other stakeholders with the hope that we will identify sponsors, and work is still in progress. We cannot mention names now but we hope when the league resumes, we shall be where we think we should be,” he said.

For his part, Tymon Katlholo said during the last season, for the first time in history, they had to field an incomplete team during a premier league game.

He said the developments were unusual, adding after the closure of the season, a special general meeting was called and the membership was informed about the status of the club.

Katlholo said it emerged from the meeting that the “situation is not all roses” adding that the meeting in Palapye evoked section 10 of GU’s constitution.“This is the section that deals with two things. The first thing is an emergency situation and it stipulates that when the team is considered to be in an emergency situation or a crisis, the general assembly would make a declaration, then the management of the team would be handed, on an interim basis, to the elders committee,” he said.
