Masisi pays tribute to Matlhabaphiri

The late  Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri has been described as a hardworking and patriotic man who had the interest of Batswana at heart.

“He was an honest, hardworking, patriotic and sincere man as well as Botswana’s longest-serving assistant minister,” said President Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi at the memorial service of  Matlhabaphiri organised by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in Molepolole on July 4 , 2018.

The President said it was not only the Matlhabaphiris who had suffered loss but the entire nation as well given his profile as having served the country on several occasions as a Member of Parliament, assistant minister and Botswana’s High Commissioner to Namibia.

He also described the former MP and Cabinet member as an efficient advisor whose wise words often helped in guiding both the party leadership and government.

Matlhabaphiri who was popularly known as GUS in the political circles joined the BDP during the years when he was employed by the Botswana Diamond Valuing Company (BDVC) and became a member of the party youth wing.

At the time of his untimely death, Mr Matlhabaphiri was a BDP candidate for Molepolole North and the President implored his party members not to despair but to continue working for the party.

President Masisi described the late as an extremely experienced public servant.

He first worked with him at the then ministry of presidential affairs and public administration when Mr Matlhabaphiri was appointed his assistant.

“He was a joy and delight to work with and I wish we could clone him,” he said.

For his part, BDP secretary general Mr Mpho Balopi said he worked with GUS very closely on a daily basis saying this showed the extent to which Matlhabaphiri was committed to BDP.

He also shared other speakers’ sentiments that the late breathed and lived everything that is BDP.

Of notable value, Mr Balopi said, was the passion and dedication he carried in serving others.  

He said this was evidenced even in the last hours of his life.

He indicated that he died in his quest to serve as on that fateful Thursday afternoon Matlhabaphiri was on his way to assist a family in Molepolole who died tragically.

Mr Balopi further said he executed the responsibilities he was charged with within party structures exceptionally.

He said Matlhabaphiri was devoted to the party such that he never deserted them, got angry or jealous after he lost the elections .

Kweneng West regional chairperson Mr Motlhophi Leo said the political icon died having clearly stated his wish on paper.  

He said his last wish was for residents of Molepolole to be provided with a fully-fledged infrastructural development system such as roads, sewerage system, and water. ENDS
