VP comforts Matlhabaphiri family

Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane on Sunday visited the family of the late Mr Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri to convey condolences to the family in Molepolole.

The Vice President who is also chairperson of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) was accompanied by some members of the party’s central committee among them secretary general Mr Mpho Balopi and member Mr Tebogo Masire. 

Mr Matlhabaphiri, a former cabinet minister and senior diplomat passed away on June 28 after a short illness.

His uncle Mr Job Matlhabaphiri said in an interview that the former Member of Parliament for Molepolole North collapsed last week Thursday afternoon at a pharmacy in Gaborone. He said he was confirmed dead by doctors upon arrival at Princess Marina Hospital.

Born  in Molepolole on November 6, 1949, Mr Matlhabaphiri was first elected to parliament in 1979 and subsequently became assistant minister of agriculture.  He had won the BDP primary elections early this year to represent the party for next year’s general elections.

He also served in various portfolios including boards, clubs, and committees in various organisations.

 In 1985, he served as the governor of the International Fund for Agriculture Development.

He has also served as a high commissioner and ambassador based in London and Stockholm between 1985 and 1996.  He was again elected MP in 1989 and served in various parliamentary committees. 

The late Matlhabaphiri also served as high commissioner of Botswana to Namibia, Ghana, and Angola respectively.  He served as assistant minister of labour and home affairs, health and presidential affairs and public administration between 2008 and 2014.  In 2015 he was awarded the Presidential Order of Honour.
