Youth urges others to utilise programmes

Young people have been implored to utilise government programmes aimed at empowering them and create employment for themselves and others.

This was said by some of Southern District youth who are beneficiaries of government empowerment programmes tailored to uplift their lives and create employment.

The motivation came during Southern District Youth Exposition held at Pelotshetlha centre recently in Mmathethe/Molapowabojang constituency.

They said they had to go through challenges to be where they are today and noted that since unemployment was the biggest challenge afflicting the youth, they (youth) need to utilise programmes such as the Youth Development Fund (YDF), LIMID and ISPAAD to improve their livelihood.

One of the youth Ms Bontle Dikgokgwane from Sekoma who started her project of Layers in 2012 said she faced many challenges when she started the business, but through perseverance and patience she was able to overcome such challenges.

She mentioned that her business which was funded through Youth Development Fund is doing well and is able to supply most chain shops like Choppies and Spar supermarkets.

Another youth Ms Millicent Binang who started her vegetable project in 2015 under YDF and faced similar challenges like the rest of upcoming businesses said hard work saw her through, and is now able to supply Spar and Choppies stores.

Mr Onthusitse Bakoko dry-land farmer said though there were challenges when he started, he has been able plough 23ha and harvested 750 bags of beans at the end of the last season.

Southern District youth coordinator Ms Monia Mfolwe said apart from having their age brackets in specific programmes such as Youth Development (YDF), youth were catered for in almost all of the existing government empowerment programmes.

She encouraged youth who benefited from YDF assistance to double efforts to ensure that their projects grow and continue to benefit them. She said the objective of the exposition was to share ideas among the youth and revive some of the youth projects which have since collapsed. ENDS
