Rugby union to host women leadership forum, tournament

Rugby Africa, in collaboration with Botswana Rugby Union (BRU), will host a two-day forum on women’s leadership in the sport in Gaborone from May 22-23.

A press release from Rugby Africa says the forum will come just before the opening of the Women’s Rugby Sevens African tournament scheduled for May 26-27.

The release says the choice of dates and venues was not accidental as Rugby Africa seeks to capitalise on the forum, the International Working Group on Women and Sport, taking place in Gaborone from May 17-20.

It says at the centre of the debate is the growth of women’s rugby and increase of the number of African female players.

The forum will explore the role of women in sport, particularly from their work in the technical support of teams to their involvement in the management structures of rugby in Africa.

It will also enable regional leaders to take the next step in accelerating development of women in rugby in Africa.

The release further says competing teams will approach the women’s rugby sevens tournament with a view to preparing for the qualifications for the Olympic Games to be held next year.

Participating teams include South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Uganda and the hosts, Botswana.

The release also says the BRU and the Botswana National Sport Commission are set to host the event which is the first of its kind for rugby in Africa. ENDS
