RB1 recognises achievements of Batswana women

With respect to celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, Radio Botswana One (RB1) is recognising achievements of women across Botswana by commemorating the week with the theme: Time is now: Urban Activists Transforming Rural Women’s Lives.

RB1, which has taken the initiative to appreciate both urban and rural women activists, has dedicated to host female presenters and guests speakers on their station throughout the day for the entire week.

International Women’s Day was started after a demonstration by women in New York, USA, in 1913 for recognition socially, economically, culturally and politically.

It is now an annual event celebrated every 8th of March celebrating the achievements of women to help accelerate action for gender diversity, equality and peace.

During an interview, RBI’s gender coordinator, Neo Lenkopane said this year their theme calls for everyone, both men and women to initiate activity which stimulates gender parity hence the broadcast hours of 11am-6pm from Tuesday to Friday that tell stories of urban women transforming rural women’s lives.

“We will be bringing together women from  all walks of lives, from females with leadership roles in male dominated sectors to ordinary single mothers who face challenges of raising a family alone,” she stated.

She also added that acknowledging the milestones of all types of women was a way of closing the gaps on women and gender issues, stating that they would host women such as Tebogo-Lebotse (a woman in sport), Tsholofelo Magang (sports activist) and Keitirele Mathape (a woman in media) on the station as women of power in different sectors who have defied the odds.

Even though International Women’s Day was celebrated nationally for a day at Mokatse in Kgatleng District), Lenkopane said that they wanted to show the commitment of the radio station in recognition of women and their potential in everyday lives. Ends
