Ministry promises successful games

Minister of  Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Thapelo Olopeng says the country intends to use sport as a tool to transform the lives of Batswana.

Speaking at the Africa Union Sport Commission (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games 2018 local organising committee and games logo launch on March 5, Minister Olopeng said Botswana would do everything to ensure that the Games were a success.

He said the AUSC Region 5 Games were held on a rotational basis, adding that the inaugural games were held in Namibia in 2004.

He said there was no doubt that since its inception they had presented a platform for individual member states to identify talent and nurture it.

He said in order to successfully host the games in December, government had invested in infrastructure development, refurbishment and maintenance of facilities.

“It is the same investment that we made previously that we have been able to host regional, continental and world event,” he said.

Olopeng said the 8th edition would be held under the theme: Together Celebrating Excellence, with the slogan ‘My time my Turn’, adding that the vision for the Games was to inspire excellence and set new benchmarks.

He said the AUSC Region 5 Games would be held in Gaborone from December 7-16 December and they would attract the best under 20 athletes from the region.

The event, he said was designed to give young athletes from the region an international games experience, saying 2018 edition would feature athletics, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, judo, netball, football, swimming, tennis and football.

AUSC Region 5, vice chairperson George Jana said by committing to host the games, Botswana has demonstrated its sense of belonging to the region and support towards youth empowerment and development through sport.

“As a region we are delighted that the games have come of age and that new challenges, targets and milestones are achieved in every edition, thereby allowing us to be more analytic and in touch with reality of sport in the region,” he said.

Jana said the objectives of the games were to promote solidarity and brotherhood among the youth of the SADC region.

To a large extent, he said the objective had been realised and greater milestone had been achieved through hosting of the Games, especially in the areas of infrastructure development, including advancement of technical officials through exposure and training.

LOC chairperson Labbeaus Peloewetswe assured the minister that his committee would work tirelessly to deliver the games.

He however said they need financial, material and human resources support to fully stage Games that would leave a lasting impression.

Furthermore, he said hosting multi-sport games was a major undertaking that involves a lot of things, therefore they expect cooperation from government ministries and participation of the private sector and public at large. ENDS
