Mental fitness good for workforce

Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Dorcas Makgato says in order to treasure good health, one must be mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally fit.

Ms Makgato was speaking in Sefhare recently at the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) health and wellness day emphasising that health and wellness should be the order of the day if a healthy and productive workforce was to be maintained.

Ms Makgato said according to World Health Organisation (WHO), health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity.

“On this note, wellness is not only about the physical wellbeing of the employees but it also includes other domains such as occupational, environmental, financial, spiritual, intellectual and sexual wellbeing of the employees,” she said.

She said people were living in a changing global world characterised by among other things, health and social challenges.

She said she was aware that WUC was undergoing a restructuring process that may bring about mixed emotions and expectations among the employees.

Ms Makgato said given activities such as this one, she was confident that the restructuring exercise will have minimal effect on employee’s health and wellness as the company’s wellness plan also focused on psychological support.

Moreover, she said, she was aware that the corporation had a health and wellness strategy which was intended to address the risk factors that may arise from improper working conditions, lifestyle habits and behaviors of employees.

She said in this regard, the WUC’s health and wellness initiatives were in line with her ministry’s health and wellness strategy as well as the international best practices.

Ms Makgato said taking care of the employee’s health as a corporation reduced government’s health expenditure on medication and other ailments because the employees’ health expenditure were covered from WUC’s Employee Health Plan. ENDS
