BDP, UDC, AP to fight for Ralekgetho

It is now official that Alliance for Progressives (AP), Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) as well as Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will slug it out during Ralekgetho council ward by-election in Moshupa/Manyana constituency slated for March 24.

This follows the issuance of the election instrument by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, which is in accordance with Section 154 (2) of the Electoral Act, (CAP. 0209) which states in part thus, “The Minister of Local Government shall for purposes of an election, or of a by-election to fill vacancy therein caused by death, resignation or otherwise, under his hand, issue an instrument addressed to the returning officer of each polling district for which a Member is to be returned."

As per the requirement of the law, such an instrument contains among others a place and day and the hours between which the returning officer will receive nominations of candidates for elections and the day for the taking of any poll.

On March 2, the three political parties nominated the names of Messrs Mothusiemeng Malwetsi, Omphile Motlhajoe and Mokganedi Monare respectively to represent them on March 24.

Ralekgetho council ward fell vacant after the death of Botswana Democratic Party councillor, Mr Gofentseone Rakala in January this year.

During 2014 general elections, Mr Rakala won the seat with 291 votes against both BCP and UDC candidates who got 270 and 218 in that order.

Principal elections officer, Ms Claire Gaopotlake relayed to BOPA in an interview that the nomination process went well. ENDS
