Khama shows off dancing skills

Despite being a busy man at the moment due to his tight schedule of traversing the breath and length of the country bidding the nation farewell as his term in office comes to an end soon, President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama found some time to unwind and enjoy Polka music with the diehards of the genre which he unearthed when he resumed his duties in 2008 as the first citizen.

Accompanied by senior government officials and amongst them the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Thapelo Olopeng and the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Frans Van der Westhuizen, President Khama danced the night away with polka enthusiats from around the country during Kalahari Polka Festival.

The genre which used to be a preserve for Kgalagadi, especially in the locations of Bokspits, Rappelspan, Vaalhoek and Struizendam is now enjoyed country wide thanks to the President who supported it during his term in office.

A generous man that he is, who is known to reward excellence, on the night he showed his appreciation of the good work done by different groups and individuals alike by giving them money and dancing along with them, much to the amusement of revellers.

Earlier on when giving remarks, Olopeng said the President left a legacy of having revived the Polka genre.

He said it was for that reason that he was appointed to be a patron of the arts and he went on to urge other groups and individuals to always share information on how they could perform better.

The minister pointed out that this would help them grow the genre and in the process help them find jobs, as people and companies will not hesitate to hire them in their events.

On the night, all the groups showcased their best talent but it was Gareng ga Dithota group from Khawa which seemed to have an upper hand as the crowd cheered them on even before they were on stage.

As the genre has now come to be appreciated across the country, this year the President invited the Letlhakane Primary School polka group and they too kickstarted the show in style as if they are seasoned dancers. ENDS
