Mmadinare race grows in leaps, bounds

Mulitudes of people from Mmadinare, Selebi Phikwe and surrounding villages attended the annual Mmadinare Christmas Race.

More than 300 athletes from various athletics clubs from around the country took part in the race, which included the 10km main race, the 5km and 2.5km race.

The event, which was sponsored by Mascom with P112 000 also included non-athletic or entertainment competitions such as the bicycle race, egg race, bucket race, sack race and mhele.

In the men’s main 10km race, Sesebo Matlapeng  from Lefika Athletics Club came in first by clocking 29:45:08 and won himself P3 500 and a trophy, followed by  Rapula  Diphoko, also from the same club, who finished the race in 29:52:12 and walked away with P2 500.

Sylvester Koko came in third clocking 30:03:14 and took home P1 500.

The women’s category was won by Gaone Bathoeng from BDF Athletics Club, who clocked 36:47:02 followed by Mema Tiango also from the same club in 38:01:03 while Maitumelo Gotsakgosi also from BDF Athletics Club came in third in 38:01:03.

All athletes received the same amount of cash as the those in mens category.

In an interview, one of the race’s organising committee member, Ipolokeng Ramatshaba also representing Botswana Athletics Association, said he was impressed with the attendance as  many people came in to cheer on athletes.

He indicated that there was a lot of improvement in terms of athletes’ time compared to last year’s race.

For his part, communications and public relations manager from Mascom, Tirelo Koagile said  the wireless company was proud to be associated with the race, which was initiated 28 years ago by former vice president, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe and other Mmadinare residents.

He said Mascom’s mandate besides the core services they provided, was to play a role in sport development in the country.

He said the Mmadinare Christmas Race was one of the great opportunities for them to fulfill Mascom sport development agenda.

He said they would like to see more athletes making history in international arena like Nigel Amos among others.

Also, he called on other organisations to put a hand in sport development in the country as there were various sport codes that needed financial assistance  to make improvements and fly the country’s flag high in international platforms. ENDS
