Court denies murder accused bail again

Gaborone Broadhurst Magistrate Court on Monday for the third time in a space of four weeks denied double-murder accused, Daniel Phadisa bail.

Magistrate Gaseitsiwe Tonoki further affirmed the prosecutions fear that Phadisa could be a flight risk and possibly commit suicide because of the gravity of the offence he faced.

He is due to return on December 21 for regular mention.

A fortnight ago, Phadisa tried to take out his frustrations on this reporter for allegedly reporting on his case and threatened to stab him with a pen, but was immediately stopped by a vigilant police officer on guard.

Reading from his notes, he told the court that he was not a flight risk and there was no previous record showing that he had ever skipped bail or absconded from attending court sessions and therefore he should be granted bail.

He also told court that the prosecution should articulately explain to why it felt so strong that he could take his life once granted bail.

However, Inspector Oamogetswe Gaboutlwelwe of Broadhurst Police Station, who was holding fort for substantive prosecutor, said there were possibilities that Phadisa could commit suicide, as the realities of what he had done sank into his head, and it would therefore be too early for him to be released into the society.

She said progress on the part of the investigations was going well, noting that they were awaiting the release of the DNA analysis from the forensic laboratory.

Upon release of the DNA report, they would be able to make a comprehensive report and send the docket to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for assessment and possible prosecution.

The facts of the matter are that Phadisa allegedly murdered two women, Bembe Magosi and her daughter, Gomolemo Motladiile, in Gaborone’s Broadhurst on independence day. ENDS
