Another positive doping result for Botswana?

Botswana Athletics Association president, Mooketsi Thari says he is aware that one of Botswana’s promising female athlete, Lydia Jele is alleged to have tested positive to banned substances.

However, Thari said he was not in any position to comment on the matter given that they were yet to receive formal communication from the relevant officers.

“Remember she is an elite athlete so she might have been tested by the IAAF doping officers. Therefore as it is right now I am constrained to give you a comment before the results land on our hands as a federation,” he said.

Should the allegations be true, Jele is most likely to be banished from sport for a period of not less than four years.

She is one of the most committed and disciplined track athletes and has been showing great promise over the last few months, positioning herself as the successor to Amantle Montsho in the 400m locally.

Last season, she started running in the athletics Diamond League and was quite instrumental to Botswana’s final finish at the 2017 World Athletics Relays as well as the 2017 World Championships.

If the ban is to be imposed on her, the athlete will not train with other athletes, take part in any competition under the Botswana Athletics Association or the Botswana National Olympic Committee.

The ban will also negatively affect plans by the BNOC to win the country medals next year at the Commonwealth Games and at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. ENDS
