Motingwa thanks churches for nation building

Coordinator of People with Disability in the Office of the President, Mr Thomas Motingwa says government cannot turn a blind eye to the contributions of churches for the success of this country.

Speaking at the official opening of the Full Gospel Church of God in Gaborone recently, Mr Motingwa said Botswana celebrated 50 years of a united, proud and peaceful nation because of the contributions churches made to the country.

He explained that the church played a major role and appealed to the various churches in Botswana to continue praying for the nation as well as making impact through preaching the true gospel to the nation at large.

He said government had noted with great concern about the social ills and other challenges that were rampant in the country, which include the high rate of crime, passion killings, issues of HIV/AIDS, smuggling of prohibited objects, high usage of substances, alcohol abuse as well as the high rate of road accidents.

In an attempt to fight against all these challenges,  he said government appealed to churches and other relevant stakeholders to continue joining hands with government to build a responsible, united and proud nation.

“My fellow people, we cannot deny the fact that due to the above mentioned challenges, this country has been robbed of talented men and women who could have immensely contributed to its development,” he said.

He said government had made efforts in order to alleviate the problem of poverty and unemployment amongst young people.

He therefore encouraged everyone who qualifies for various programmes to engage the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, top acquire more of these programmes, because programmes such as Economic Stimulus Programme, LIMID, amongst others, had the potential of developing young people into self-reliance.

Mr Motingwa emphasised the need to praise God and pray for the country so that Batswana continue to enjoy a free democracy, peace and stability.

He urged church members and pastors to remain united and remain a good example to the nation. ENDS
