New agreement protects trusts

President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama says the new concession lease agreement were adopted to protect Community Developments Trusts from mismanagement of resources by some board members.

President Khama was responding to concerns raised by residents of Ditshiping in the North West region recently who complained about the new agreement which they said weakened  their authority over the investors.

President Khama said   government took a step that the new lease agreement for concession areas be signed by the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism on behalf of the Community Development Trust and the investor party to address issues of mismanagement.

He said it was realised that some Community Trust board members used the funds for their personal gain in as far as using the funds as personal loans.

President Khama also pointed out that corruption was rife in the old lease agreement as some board members made agreements with some investors which favoured them personally.

However, President Khama said it was imperative for the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) to appreciate concerns raised by community trusts.

He therefore said the BTO officials should address the concerns raised by the Kopano Trust of Ditshiping in two weeks’ time as well as address concerns raised by Xhaxhaba residents.

He observed that community members in the tourism management areas should be given priority in terms of employment in tourism businesses operating in their areas.

President Khama therefore said it was unfortunate that Xhaxhaba residents raised concern that they were not employed by tourism facilities in their settlement.

He said BTO should investigate such tourism businesses to establish why they were not engaging the local communities.

He also said the North West District Council should ensure communities of Ditshiping benefited from tenders in their communities compared to those elsewhere.

The Kopano Mokoro Community Trust official Mr Galethuse Manga had raised concern that their trust was not consulted regarding the introduction of the new concession lease agreement.Ends
