‘Treat children equally’

The Day of African Child is the most arguably among the widely commemorated in remembrance of thousands of black South African youths, who marched the streets of Soweto protesting the poor of education that was offered to blacks in the apartheid era.

Speaking at this year’s event on behalf of UNICEF in Lobatse on Friday, Child Protection Specialist, Mr Ben Semommung stressed the importance of  treating children equally, especially those who are facing misfortunes in their lives.

He said the objective of UNICEF was to advocate for the protection of children from all forms of violence, saying it also included helping children to meet their basic needs to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential and to make sure their stories were told.

He appreciated the positive affords taken by government in the quest to enable environment for the protection of children from violence by domesticating the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Through the Enactment of the 2009 Children’s Act. He acknowledged that accelerating protection empowerment and equal opportunities for children was the responsibility for everyone.

He appealed to everyone to play a role in deepening the understanding of the impact of sexual exploitation and abuse of children.

He appealed to parents to talk to children concerning social problems and misfortunes that children are facing by encouraging them to identify issues that affect them.

He said UNICEF remained ready and willing to explore ways of how to support government and communities to address the issues faced by children, especially exploitation and abuse.

He also implored every Motswana to join hands in creating a safe and supportive environment for children in Botswana to help and expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.

The Day of African Child chairperson in Lobatse, Mr Ellias Rantleru said children were gifts from God. As such he appealed to parents to protect every child and mould them to be great citizens. BOPA
