Review of hunting ban on-going

The ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism is reviewing the hunting ban introduced by government two years ago.

Tourism minister , Mr Tshekedi Khama informed Parliament on Monday that the ban is reviewed annually in accordance with Section 45 of the Wildlife Conservation and Natural Parks of 1992.

“Accordingly, my ministry through the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) has commenced a review process on the status of the ban by undertaking aerial survey counts on wild animals. The surveys started in 2015, but did not cover the entire country mainly due to limited resources,” Mr Khama said in response to a question.

He said the surveys are going to continue until adequate and accurate figures covering both dry and the wet seasons for 2017 are available.

“The public is kept informed about the status of the suspension and the trend in the last three years has been through publishing the statutory instrument through the Government Gazette, followed by Kgotla meetings, school addresses, annual commemoration days like the World Wildlife Day, World Environment Days, radio talk shows and through print media,” the minister said.

Ghanzi North MP, Mr Noah Salakae had asked whether there has been any review of the hunting ban and whether the public was kept informed about the status of the ban.BOPA
