Okavango Sub-district Council needs more staff

The Okavango Sub-district Council faces an acute shortage of staff.  Responding to comments during the sub-council meeting in Gumare, assistant council secretary, Ms Mogomotsi Seemule said the council had a staff shortfall of 66 officers.

She noted that some posts were left vacant because officers were reluctant to work in the Okavango area. “We are competing with urban councils and in most cases officers turn down our offers because of location,” Ms Seemule stated.

She explained that recruitment was centralised and that filling of posts was done by the North West District Council. She said according to their interview schedule,  they would be conducting interviews this month and expressed hope that most of the vacant posts would be filled.

Councillor Kitso Ngande of Makgobokgobo ward had asked why the sub-council failed to fill vacancies as it was crucial to increase staff for the smooth running of their daily activities.

Councillors said it was disheartening because it seemed that it had now become normal for the district to run its business without staff. ENDS
