Renaming shows intent

Botswana’s population is growing faster than the limited land resource the country has.

Consequently, President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama told a kgotla meeting in Magotlhwane yesterday that government was doing its best to come up with land management solutions.

The President said government, therefore, found it important to merge land allocation and water reticulation under one ministry of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services because they were complementary and intertwined.

In addition, President Khama said the recent renaming of ministries was meant to put more emphasis on the direction government intended to take in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness of the ministries.

For instance, President Khama said the health ministry attained a new name Ministry of Health and Wellness because government did not want people to be clients of hospital facilities but people should rather live healthier lives.

Therefore, public lectures on how best to eradicate lifestyle diseases and other emerging diseases were needed.

He added that if people could develop a habit of exercising and eating healthier food then they would not go to health facilities to seek medical attention.

President Khama said the Botswana National Spatial Development Framework would provide a holistic approach to all physical planning in order to enable government to merge resources and services when the need arose.

On other issues, President Khama pledged support for residents during the village’s Diamond Jubilee slated for December 19.

He donated 30 chairs to the village kgotla, blankets to the elderly and sickly as well as to the disadvantaged.

He also donated bibles that would encourage the nation to lean on God.

One of the residents, Ms Nananki Mogojwe thanked the President for prudent resource and financial management as well as the quality leadership style he showed.

She also expressed gratitude to government programmes availed in their village noting their lives would never be the same. ENDS
