UB sports centre opens

President Lt. General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has officially opened the University of Botswana (UB) Indoor Sports Centre located at the main campus.

The ultra-modern arena comprises basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton, squash and tennis courts and has a capacity of 3 418 seats. It also has gymnasiums for martial arts, aerobics, strength training and cardio, as well as performance laboratories for analysing and improving performance.

President Khama described the arena as a ‘wonderful facility’ and a shining example of successes and achievements of Botswana, adding that it would host high quality national and international events and promote and support student learning in sports and recreational activities.

“The Campus Indoor Sports Centre is undoubtedly one of the largest of its kind in Africa. For years, the university community and indeed the rest of Botswana, the sports and fitness fraternity, in particular, have been looking forward to the moment when the Campus Indoor High Performance Centre would come alive. This is true, when one calls to mind its high performance component which must cater for the analysis and training of local and international-bound athletes,” President Khama said, giving a keynote address at UB on Monday.

He said national teams athletes would now be analysed and conditioned at the high performance centre which would save the country millions of Pula, which used to be spent on sending athletes to high performance centres abroad.

“Incidentally, the centre will also assist the country in monitoring and grooming young, talented athletes in the junior and senior secondary schools. Data banks of the performance characteristics of these athletes would be developed and tracked for better future performance,” the President said.

Furthermore, he stated that the centre would assist in rehabilitation and recuperation of athletes and patients and promote dietary and exercise health programmes.

The Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Unity Dow commended everyone who was involved in the conception and building of the centre. She said the facility was not for the University of Botswana alone, but also a national assert.

“It must benefit the nation. It must be the link between the university and the nation at large,” she said. UB vice chancellor Professor Thabo Fako said “the university as an institution is an integral part of any state which helps to stimulate human intellect.”

Many dignitaries including cabinet ministers, members of diplomatic corps and members of UB Council graced the event. ENDS
