The Office of the President has confirmed that the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Maxwell Motowane, passed away on December 22. BGCIS coordinator, Dr Jeff Ramsay said in a statement that the cause of death was not yet known, "though we understand that he complained of chest pains prior to his passing".

According to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development website, Mr  Motowane joined the ministry in 2011, replacing Mr Kentse Rammidi. Before this re-deployment, he was Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry. He became the MP for Letlhakeng West in 2009 and was in the same year appointed Assistant Minister of Health. He was transferred in the same position to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2010.

In what was viewed as an advantage to The People’s Ministry, Mr Motowane brought a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the Economic Diversification Drive (EDD). EDD entailed the diversification of  the country’s sources of economic growth and income, in such a way that the country would become more or less dependant on all sectors of the economy. The main objective of EDD was to involve the private sector’s participation in sustainable economic development and to “wean off” from government support so that they could compete openly in both domestic and global markets.

Mr Motowane had a Bsc (Hons) in Estates Management and a Diploma in Land and Property Valuation. Before he joined Parliament, he worked for Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) from 1983-1996. In 1997, he set up his own real estate business dubbed Motowane & Associates. Date of funeral has not yet been announced. ENDS
