BOFEPUSO lodged one case against government

Parliament has been told that in April 2011, public officers embarked in a nationwide industrial action, which continued until June 10, 2011 when notice was given for its suspension.

Responding to a question in Parliament on March 13, the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse said according to records, there was only one case lodged by Botswana Federation of Public Sector Unions (BOFEPUSO) against government. He said the case ended in favour of BOFEPUSO with costs awarded to them.

He, however, said the costs had not yet been taxed, so it was impossible to say how much government would be required to pay.

MP for Shoshong, Mr Phillip Makgalemela had asked the minister to state the number of cases which were filed before the courts by government and BOFEPUSO respectively following the 2011 public service industrial strike.

He had also wanted to know the number of those decided by courts, those won by government and those awaiting judgement at the time of responding to this question and the total legal fees paid or to be paid by government.

He also wanted to know how much government was to be paid for those cases where it won and the costs awarded in its favour. ENDS
