Khama to be sworn in October 28

Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama will be sworn in as President of Botswana in an inauguration that will be administered by Chief Justice Maruping Dibotelo on October 28.
 
Chief Justice Dibotelo declared Lt Gen. Khama elected President after Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won the required minimum of 29 Members of Parliament of the possible 57 during the general elections.
 
Section 32 (3b) of the Constitution prescribes that the winning presidential candidate shall receive support of more than half of the elected members of the National Assembly. That means the presidential candidate must have obtained the declared support of at least 29 MPs out of the 57.
 
Notwithstanding, the BDP under President Khama’s leadership won 37 parliamentary seats in the just ended general election. The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) under leadership of Mr Duma Boko and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) under Mr Dumelang Saleshando ushered in 17 and three MPs respectively.
 
President Khama’s swearing-in will be followed by the meeting of the first session of the 11th Parliament on Wednesday where all 57 elected and four Specially Elected MPs in accordance with section 71 of the Constitution will also be sworn in.
 
The speaker and the deputy speaker of the National Assembly will be elected and sworn-in after which the vice president would be endorsed by MPs via a secret ballot after the President has submitted a name.
 
The VP will then be sworn-in by the elected speaker of the National Assembly. All MPs, among them the 32 newly elected, will go through orientation on November 3-7 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC).
 
The 11th Parliament will officially open on November 10, which will see President Khama address the nation for the seventh time since he assumed office in 2008.  Meanwhile, Chief Justice Dibotelo has congratulated President Khama for the confidence that voters had placed on him by electing him their President. ends
