Annual Botswana libraries consortium conference next month

Botswana Libraries Consortium (BLC) will on November 6-7 hold the second Open Access (OA) Conference under the theme: Open Access, Research and Scholarship.

A pre-conference workshop will be on November 4-5, while the BLC annual general meeting will be on November 5.  A press release from BLC stated that the forum would provide a platform for the exchange of information on current developments, applications and opportunities for the expansion of open access initiatives in Africa and the international world.

It said the target audience would be academics, researchers, authors, journal editors, societal publishers, directors of research institutes, policy makers, research funders/funding agencies, media, government departments, information professionals while students are also encouraged to participate.

The release stated that objectives of the second open access conference were to promote online and e-research in Botswana, facilitate Botswana-based research organisations’ connections with technologically developed research organisations worldwide.

Other objectives, said the release, were to encourage national research organisations, approve open access policies for purpose of inter-linkages in research, support development of quality Open Access journals and Institutional Repositories (IR) in Botswana for purpose of disseminating research results.

It further states that this will help Botswana to diversify its economy through use of developed technologies used globally, bring together various research communities in Botswana and encourage them to advocate and join the Open Access movement.

“This will bring leadership of research institutions and government, funders to share understanding of OA benefits and work towards open access policies and help achieve Vision 2016 for Botswana in terms of an educated and informed nation,” says the release. ENDS
